Group Drumming
Communal drumming is amongst the first artistic activities known
to people, by using hand clapping and stamping of feet rhythms were
developed which later became music, song and dance.
Neuroscientists have shown that there is a link between the areas
of the brain which involve vocal imitation (language), tempo (rhythm),
and movement (dance).
In africa, drumming and music has always been an integral part of
life - there is a West African saying: "without rhythm there
is no movement."
In ancient times, Drumming was used as a means of communication over
long distances, that predated morse code and telephones by centuries.
Playing drums was a part of all aspects of village life - and was
used to bring people together at festivals, harvesting time, celebrations,
births, naming ceremonies, and for almost all occasions.
.
Drumming for Team Building
By using interactive drumming as a team building activity we
harness the power of african rhythms, and the genetic footprint in
each one of us that instinctively responds to rhythm and drumming.
Drumming as a team or group is a co-operative activity that strengthens
the team by teaching the value of working together to make music.
The drumming team building activity is especially powerful since it
includes all members of a team equally regardless of their age, culture
or position in the organisation - and it highlights communication
in a non-verbal way.
Our drumming team building sessions take this a step further by intentionally
challenging people to work together to create a musical piece. For
team building drumming we use authentic African Djembe drums - using
2 basic sounds, the bass and tone, many rhythms can be created. Singing
and dancing is often included in our team building activities - and
spontaneous creative participation is encouraged.
